What is your dental emergency?

This initial guidance does not replace an assessment by a dentist. Contact the clinic to explain what has happened and check availability.

Severe toothache

Persistent pain or pain that keeps you awake needs assessment. Avoid chewing on that side and very hot or cold foods. This pain can have several causes, such as extensive tooth decay causing inflammation of the dental pulp, gum disease or infection. If the pain is severe, ask a pharmacist for advice on pain relief.

A broken or fractured tooth

A fracture can cause sensitivity or leave a sharp edge. Avoid chewing with that tooth. If you find the broken fragment, keep it in milk and bring it to your appointment. A broken tooth is an important dental emergency and should be assessed by a dentist as soon as possible. Contact us so we can assess the damage.

Infections, abscesses and swollen gums

Pain with swelling or pus may indicate an infection and needs urgent dental assessment. Do not try to drain the area yourself. If swelling spreads rapidly or makes breathing or swallowing difficult, go to a hospital emergency department (A&E). Call us during the clinic’s opening hours.

A lost filling or crown

A lost restoration can leave the tooth sensitive. Avoid chewing in that area and do not use household glue to put it back in place. Contact us to have the tooth checked and discuss repair or replacement.

Dental injuries and knocked-out teeth

If a permanent tooth is completely knocked out, seek urgent dental care without waiting until the next day. Hold it by the crown, without touching or rubbing the root, and keep it in milk while you travel to the dentist. Do not put a baby tooth back in place. Call us if we are open; if we cannot see you, find another available service immediately.

Wisdom tooth pain

Pain or swelling around a wisdom tooth needs examination to establish the cause. Keep the area clean gently and avoid touching the gum. Contact us for an assessment, particularly if you develop a fever or find it difficult to open your mouth.

Contact the Clinic
Pain after root canal treatment or an extraction

Follow the instructions given by the professional who carried out your treatment. If the pain increases or you develop a fever, swelling or persistent bleeding, request an urgent review. Contact the team who treated you or call us to check availability.

Orthodontic emergencies: brackets or wires

A loose bracket or a rubbing wire can cause discomfort. Avoid pulling on the brace or cutting it yourself. Contact your orthodontist or the clinic for advice and to arrange a review.

How do we manage a dental emergency?

Every case needs an individual assessment. A dentist from our team will examine your mouth in the dental chair and carry out any appropriate additional diagnostic tests. After assessing your case, we will explain the diagnosis, provide an individual treatment plan and give you a quotation.
